Seven boats out!

The LAM, LTAII and the LCA did about the same as yesterday, with a slow morning and better afternoon. Some guys with 6-8 and some with only a few. The LMAIII had a marathon trip that left at 4 am and did good. Some with 15-20 and some with only 8-9. Haven’t heard from any of the three sixpack boats. I’ll be running the LMAIII tomorrow and we have plenty of room, once again using two boats for the public all day. weather looks good except for an occassional shower.

Surfland Bait and Tackle Report:

MAY 21

Well again, the weekend produced some happy fishermen. We heard of a lot of little fish in the range on 10-18 inches being caught. What a great thing to hear. And then there was the next group out there that seemed to be in the 24-36 inch range. Some tides produced more fish than others, like the afternoon low tides in the river. We heard of a lot of bait fish, sandeels being pushed around by the strippers.
.
The oceanfront Saturday morning had the Page boys pretty active. Using worms they said they must of caught at least 32 fish and out of that eleven were keeper size. The Kelly boys were also present this weekend. They were going through a lot of worms on the oceanfront with all the little schoolies nibbling away at them. So all in all, a great weekend for most, especially people from the 495 belt!

Last week I said that I had not heard much about what was happening up around P-town. Well, a large number of good size stripers moved into the area call Wood End. This is the corner of the beach you go around to get up to Race Point. It seems that the schools of bass are hanging around the point there in between 30 and 50 feet of water. Umbrella rigs and vertical jigging are the two most productive methods being used now.

This change up around P-town is not all that uncommon. In this early part of the season many of the stripers are actually just moving through this area headed north. Another bunch of fish will come into the bay to replace them. Some areas will still remain active with the fish that do stay. Don’t be surprised if you find that places you have caught fish before become devoid of fish for a while. Also the schools that do remain start moving to other areas. One of these areas to start looking would be the deeper water off the north edge of Billingsgate Shoals in 40 to 50 feet of water and up towards the Path. With the nice weather we had this early spring I get the feeling that most people are trying to push the summer. It will get here when it wants.

There are bluefish in the Bay. One was taken last week off the south edge of Billingsgate Shoals and I’ve heard that a few big bluefish have been taken up by South Sunken Meadow. One of these days when we finally get a good number of sunny days and the water warms enough these bluefish should show themselves.

I’d like to take this opportunity to let you know some of the activities that will be occurring at Rock Harbor this summer season. The first activity will be the second annual Blessing of the Fleet which will start approximately 11:30 am on the 23rd of June. For those with boats and you want to be blessed you should launch at Rock Harbor and the blessing area will be where the old Coast Guard boat is docked. High tide is 2:45 pm. so the smaller boats can go through first with the larger boats and charter boats going through around 12:15 to 12:30 pm. Last season there were a large number of observers and participants so this season we should expect an even larger crowd.

There will be other activities such as two tournaments that Rock Harbor Charter service will sponsor. There is a Harbor Day being planned by the Friends of Rock Harbor. Also mother nature has planned a large number of beautiful sunsets which everyone is invited to.

We have Memorial Day weekend on our front door. The unofficial, official beginning of the summer season. Rock Harbor and it’s charter fleet invite you to come and see the boats, ask any questions you’d like, or even try out your luck on landing one of the striped bass we have out in Cape Cod Bay.

If you’d like to get out and try your hand at landing one of the striped bass we’re famous for give me a call at 508-240-8267. If you would like to know what’s going on in other areas of the Cape come into the Goose Hummock and ask anyone of the guys there. They keep track of the fishing all over the Cape.

Capt Mark Haley-Shannonsea.com fishing report

by Goose Hummock on 05/21/12

On Sunday we had an eight-hour trip with Juan and his team. We left the dock at 8am and headed right to the north edge of Billingate Shoals. As we were steaming we could see a few charter boats making the long run across the bay to P-Town. We fished the edge for about an hour with umbrella rigs (red with silver spoons) and could not find anything on the top or mark anything under us. We them made the run to Barnstable, near the bell can. We hit that area again with the rigs and again nothing. We got word that on Saturday it was good in front of the “Church” which is located off the Brewster Flats.

Upon arrival and a few other charter boats, we put the rigs out. We pounded this area for over two hours and nothing. The only good thing was that the other boats were also pitching a shut out. Well I told the crew, saddle up and off we went to Provincetown. Heck it was the only spot we had not hit !!!

We started at the bathhouse in 30 feet of water and worked east and west. We had great marks so we felt this our luck was going to change. Well it did, the reels started to scream and so did everyone else. First fish in the boat and nice 16-pound striper. We got them out again, umbrella rigs, and again things stayed heated up. We had great marks under us and the reels would go off right after. At the end, we had three nice keepers as well as we tossed some beautiful stripers back for another fight.

We set the Furuno GPS for home, Northside Marina and settled in for a nice calm relaxing trip home. As we were heading back, I could only think about the thought of a “Shut Out”..and only felt that was good in Baseball !!

As we tied up at the dock, we all agreed the day ended perfectly and as Juan said …”Its not how you start, its how you finish”….

If you are looking to get out for a great day of fishing and long lasting memories, give me a call…. Stay safe and think…Screaming drags !!!!!
